FEDERICO MAYOR DENOUNCES ASSASSINATION OF INDONESIAN JOURNALIST

Paris, June 13 {No. 97-97} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor today condemned the suspected murder of Indonesian Journalist Mohammad Sayuti, a reporter for the Ujungpandang Pos Makasar who was known for his articles about corruption and abuse of power. He was found injured and unconscious in a village 250 km away from Ujungpandang and died on June 12 having never regained consciousness.

Federico Mayor expressed indignation at the violence which killed this journalist: "Just as UNESCO’s Executive Board was meeting and confirmed our Organisation’s determination to defend, everywhere and always, freedom of speech, violence has again struck a journalist who was merely doing his job. This aggression does not only target a man, but freedom of speech, press freedom and democratic principles. No effort should be spared to shed light on this unspeakable act."

The death of Mohammad Sayuti follows that of another Indonesian journalist, Udin Syafruddin who was investigating real estate speculation in his province for the Yogyakarta daily Barita Nasional. He died on August 16 after he was attacked outside his home.

Mr Mayor extended his condolences to Mr Sayuti’s family and colleagues.
