UNESCO CONDEMNS THE MURDER OF ALGERIAN FILM DIRECTOR ALI TENKHI

Paris, August 25 {No. 97-129} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor today condemned the murder of Algerian film director Ali Tenkhi, perpetrated last Wednesday in Baïnem, a western suburb of Algiers.

"Once again, culture suffers at the hands of fanatics. In Ali Tenkhi, who had just finished his first feature-length film - with the premonitory title Le Papillon ne volera plus (The butterfly won’t fly any more) - Algerian cinema loses one of its great hopes. And UNESCO can only denounce with the greatest vigour this violence directed towards Algerians - journalists, film-makers, intellectuals - trying against all odds to pursue their creative work," stressed Federico Mayor. He also declared himself horrified by the bombing at the livestock market in Medea last Thursday, which left one person dead and eight wounded. "The mindless bloodshed, the repeated massacres, the daily atrocities that some want to inflict on the Algerian people are totally intolerable, and we will not cease to condemn them with the utmost determination."

Mr Mayor extended his condolences to Ali Tenkhi’s family and friends.
