UNESCO CONDEMNS THE MURDER OF PHILIPPINES JOURNALIST DANNY HERNANDEZ

Paris, June 6 {No. 97-87} - UNESCO today condemned the assassination, on June 3, of Philippines journalist Danny Hernandez who exposed corruption related to drug trafficking in his reporting for the People’s Daily Tonight newspaper.

Federico Mayor declared: "As Director-General of UNESCO, an organization that defends freedom of the press, I condemn the killing of Mr Hernandez who lost his life in the exercise of his profession and in the defence of freedom of expression."

Hernandez’s death is the latest in a string of murders of Philippines journalists. In December 1996, Roberto Berbon, editor of DZMM, one of the Philippines’ largest radio stations, was shot dead south of Manila. In February 1996, the editor of the weekly "Press Freedom", Ferdinand Reyes, was killed in the city of Dipolog. Both journalists were known for exposing corruption.

Mr Mayor extended his condolences to Danny Hernandez’s family and his colleagues.
