Anti-Piracy Training for Trainers

The advanced-level workshop will focus on intellectual property protection, mechanisms for detecting, investigating and measuring piracy and for preventing and reducing the spread of piracy.

The Anti-Piracy Training for Trainers, APTT-Windhoek, is the second in a series of regional anti-piracy training courses developed in the framework of the UNESCO Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity.

Copyright enforcement officials representing the Southern African Development Community (SADC), including Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, as well as Angola and Mozambique, will attend the training course.

The objectives of the APTT Course are threefold:

• to provide participants with knowledge and expertise in the field of copyright law and intellectual piracy;
• to disseminate knowledge to a wide circle of national authorities involved in anti-piracy activities, i.e., law-makers, government, police, customs and magistrates, and;
• to contribute to the reduction of intellectual piracy rates in the countries concerned.

Upon completion of the project, the participants will be expected to:

• organize seminars for the concerned national authorities of each beneficiary country in the field of anti-piracy;
• transmit the acquired knowledge, appropriately adapted to the national framework, to their colleagues from different copyright enforcement entities. This stage will be developed as a new project. UNESCO will collaborate with the beneficiary countries in organizing each national event and provide methodological and technical assistance.

The project’s main partners are: IFFRO (International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations) and IPA (International Publishers Association), IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), the Motion Picture Association (MPA), BSA (Business Software Alliance), Namibian authorities in the field of copyright, UNESCO Offices in Windhoek and Harare. The project is funded by the Agencia Española de Cooperación International (AECI).
