Text 1

Launched in the European Parliament in January 2009, this study is the outcome of the International Federation of Actors’ project (FIA):‘Changing gender portrayal: promoting employment opportunities for women in the performing arts’, carried out in 2008.

This study gives a real overview of the experience of performers across Europe in relation to how their age and gender profile impacts on their employment opportunities.
This research was completed via a questionnaire which was available online for completion by performers from all over Europe and thanks to structured interviews carried out with the main actors who influence gender portrayal on screen and in theatres, in order to better understand how to have an impact in this area.

The research was carried out by Dr. Deborah Dean, of the Industrial Relations Research Unit of Warwick University, UK, and of the European Industrial Relations Observatory, with the support of the European Commission.

The study is available in English, French, Spanish and German, and can be downloaded from the FIA website: http://www.fia-actors.com/fr/research.html
