UNESCO DIRECTOR-GENERAL CONDEMNS KIDNAPPING OF IRANIAN JOURNALIST BY TALEBAN

Paris, August 19 {No.98-171} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor today condemned the kidnapping of Mahmoud Saremi, a correspondent of the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, by Taleban military forces.

“By arresting a professional journalist the Taleban have once again demonstrated their determination to silence all voices they do not control,” he said.

Mr Mayor urged the immediate release of Mr Saremi and announced that “UNESCO will reinforce its media assistance programme in this conflict area to ensure the right of the population to receive information free of bias and partisan interests.”

He reiterated his condemnation of violence, bombing civilian populations, violations of human rights, particularly the rights of women and press freedom, by the Taleban and those who support them, and concluded that “only negotiations respectful of all can bring just and durable solutions.”
