In order to introduce the concept of the Green Economy and to share the experience thus far gained by other countries with Chinese policy-makers, experts and development practitioners, UNESCO’s Bureau of Strategic Planning is organizing a special edition of the UNESCO Future Forum on 21 August 2009 just prior to the launch of the newly created Eco-Forum Guiyang (EFG).

This event is co-organized with the sponsors of EFG - the National Committee on Population, Resources and Environment of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Beijing University and the Guiyang Municipal Committee. International experts include Sheng Fulai of UNEP, Constance Thomas of ILO, Shahid Yusuf of the World Bank, H.E. Chung Rae Kwon (Korean Ambassador for Climate Change), Tan Siong Leng (Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore) and George C. Varughese (Development Alternatives Group from India). Mr Zhang Xinsheng, Secretary-General of the EFG and Former Chairman of UNESCO’s Executive Board will deliver a welcome address. The Future Forum will be moderated by Mr Hans d’Orville, Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning.

The specific objectives of the UNESCO Future Forum are:

  • To present the concept of the green economy and green jobs and to familiarize Chinese decision-makers with international initiatives and approaches in this regard;
  • To raise awareness on the potential implications of the green economy and green jobs approach for sustainable economic development nationally and globally;
  • To share experiences in the practice of the green economy and in related policy formulation and to identify areas for practical action;
  • To build partnerships with relevant institutions and like-minded stakeholders.
