Following the successful establishment of the Forum of Arab Parliamentarians for Education (FARPED) in Rabat, on 25-26 June 2007, the Executive Board of the FARPED invited UNESCO to organize, in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS) and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), its second session in Beirut, on 21 and 22 July 2008.
This Second Session of the FARPED aimed at forging a stronger partnership with parliamentarians of the Arab States in associating them more closely with the implementation of the Education for All’s objectives. A working session was dedicated to the presentation of the parliamentary Activity Reports of the FARPED members on Education for All (EFA). These presentations will be compiled in a publication.
Arab parliamentarians, members of the FARPED, met for two days to analyze the ways and means of enhancing UNESCO’s cooperation with parliamentarians at national and regional levels in order to promote the six goals of EFA on the agenda of parliaments and in national legislation in their countries. In conclusion of this Inter-parliamentary Conference, the participants adopted a Declaration aiming at having a direct impact on the preparation of legislation and the adoption of national budgets, and to ensure that the EFA’s programmes are reflected in reality. The members of the FARPED Executive Bureau have been renewed for one year more.
