Serbia Humanitarian Emergency

A refugee woman and her son meet with UNFPA staff.
UNFPA Serbia CO

The ongoing refugee crisis in Europe constitutes the largest movement of population since World War II. Originating mainly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, in 2015 over a million refugees and migrants reached Europe by sea, most of them through Greece. Thousands also stream through the Balkans (especially Serbia and Macedonia) on their periilous journey towards safety and stability. Humanitarian needs and challenges are complex. On their way toward countries of destination, women are facing various forms of violence, discrimination and stigma caused by prejudices based on their religion, nationality, and status. UNFPA focuses on providing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and works to prevent and respond to gender based violence (GBV).
