City of Valletta from the Upper Barrakka Gardens

The workshop will bring together heritage professionals and sites from the Mediterranean area in the City of Valletta, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1980. Participants from Albania, Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro and Turkey will be introduced to disaster risk reduction principles in World Heritage sites’ management plans.
The workshop will pave the way to mainstreaming disaster risk management principles in the management systems of World Heritage sites in the Mediterranean and South East European areas. The three World Heritage sites of Malta (City of Valletta; Megalithic Temples of Malta; Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum) will be used as learning models to be applied to the entire region.

Heritage professionals from Malta and target countries in the Mediterranean area will be provided with knowledge on current thinking, methods and tools available to identify, assess and manage multiple natural-derived risks and learn about preparatory measures to mitigate their material and human impact on UNESCO designated sites.
