UNESCO and the World Bank launched teletraining programs in Morocco

In April 2000 UNESCO began the implementation of a World Bank financed project aimed at developing an infrastructure for training teachers via interactive television

Goal
"Distance education through interactive television” aimed at primary school staff in schools in four, mainly rural, provinces of Morocco, where the levels of illiteracy are particularly high. The objectives were to enable teachers to deepen their knowledge of the disciplines that they teach, to consolidate their pedagogical skills, and to acquire new skills, thus allowing the schools to become an active partner in community development.

Approaches
The teletraining program included various approaches:

  • lessons through interactive television;
  • local seminars;
  • self-teaching;
  • peer-teaching;
  • tutoring;
  • on-line access to documentary sources and the Internet.


  • Collaboration
    The project was implemented in partnership with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Whilst UNESCO was primarily responsible for assisting the Ministry of Education with the design and delivery of continuous training, the ITU provided technical assistance with the purchase and installation of technical equipment and related training.

    A central corps of educationalists, computer technicians and communication were responsible for the elaboration of teaching materials and teaching aids, and for the broadcasting of interactive lessons simulating the virtual classroom to 15 learning centres.
