Functions of the Bureau

According to Rule 12.2 of the Committee’s Rules of Procedure, the Bureau ‘shall coordinate the work of the Committee and fix the dates, times and order of business of meetings. It shall exercise any other duty entrusted to it by the Committee’. Paragraph 49 of the Operational Directives designates the Bureau as the body authorized to approve international assistance requests up to US$25,000. The Bureau is also entrusted to evaluate and approuve emergency requests greater than US$25,000 (paragraph 50 of the Operational Directives). In case of extreme urgency, and in conformity with Criterion U.6, the Bureau of the Committee may invite the State(s) Party(ies) concerned to submit a nomination to the List of Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding on an accelerated schedule (paragraph 33 of the Operational Directives).

Meeting 5.COM 2.BUR, 25 October 2010

The Bureau of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee met for the second time on Monday 25 October 2010 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room IV (Fontenoy).

The Bureau evaluated international assistance requests up to US$25,000 and approved specific proposals prepared by the Secretariat on item 3 concerning the ‘other functions of the Committee’ of the plan for the use of the resources of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund, adopted by the General Assembly at its third session in June 2010 (Resolution 3.GA 8).

The provisional agenda of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee (Nairobi/Kenya, 15 to 19 November 2010) was further presented by the Secretariat.

The Bureau of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee met for the first time on 27 November 2009 for evaluating requests for preparatory assistance for elaborating a nomination for inscription on the Urgent Safeguarding and proposals of a programme, project or activity to be selected as best reflecting the principles and objectives of the Convention. It also evaluated International Assistance requests up to US$25,000.
