Plusieurs prix internationaux ont été créés afin de contribuer à la sauvegarde des chefs-d’œuvre proclamés. Le Conseil exécutif de l’UNESCO a approuvé, à sa 161e session (avril 2001), le Règlement général des prix pour la sauvegarde, la protection et la promotion des espaces culturels ou des formes d’expression culturelle populaire ou traditionnelle proclamés par l’UNESCO « chefs-d’œuvre du patrimoine oral et immatériel de l’humanité » (English|French|Spanish|Russian|Chinese|Arabic).
Composé de cinq membres nommés par le Directeur général, le jury était présidé par le président du jury de la Proclamation. Les prix ont pour la plupart été décernés immédiatement après la cérémonie de proclamation, et des cérémonies spéciales ont été organisées pour la remise du Prix Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan.
