Culture
Welcome to the website of the Culture Sector of UNESCO’s Nairobi Office.
In line with the global mandate and objectives of UNESCO’s Culture Programme, this website highlights the approach used by the office to demonstrate the role of cultural heritage and cultural expressions in achieving sustainable development, intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace.
The work undertaken by the office benefits, to the greatest extent possible, all the countries covered by the Office: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda.
Through UNESCO’s culture conventions, the specific activities are aimed at creating awareness, providing a platform for information sharing and exchange, building capacity through training, and elaborating policies and tools in the following domains:
- World Heritage
- Intangible cultural heritage
- Cultural property
- Cultural expressions
- Cultural policies
- Intercultural dialogue
The above activities are implemented in partnership with national authorities, universities, cultural institutions, cultural experts, cultural practitioners and civil society, as necessary.
