Education is a human right and is a critical means for achieving sustainable development and building knowledge societies. UNESCO's mission in education is to promote education as a fundamental human right, to improve the quality of education and to facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity building.The Nairobi Office's Education Programme focuses on supporting Member States to achieve the Six Education for All (EFA) Goals and two education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

In the spirit of the One UN Delivering as One in Rwanda, UNESCO will be involved in four strategic areas through capacity development, advocacy, generation and dissemination of information and research:
