23-28 November, 2015: Mentoring Girls in STEM in Kenya Lake Region Scientific Camps of Excellence for Secondary School Girls: The counties of Kisumu, Homa Bay, Nyamira, Siaya, Migori and Kisii will be participating in the UNESCO Scientific Camp of Excellence for mentoring Secondary School Girls on STEM in November, 2015. Female students in their second and third years of high school will be selected with the help of the school administration and school-based science clubs. The students will be mentored on opportunities in engineering and science careers, how to work towards gaining access into the STEM courses as well as on life skills, with the aim of inspiring them to take courses in STEM and thereby increase the enrolment of female students in the disciplines at University level. The students will also be exposed to both the learning and work environment for STEM courses.

13 October, 2015 - Programme for Sensitization:Kenya Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Association: UNESCO Clubs have always played an important role in continually lending a fresh perspective under local ownership to foster UNESCO’s values and principles. They strive to build networks among people that enable solidarity through supporting Education for All and encourage dialogue between cultures as a learning experience and as support for cultural diversity. UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, together with Kenya National Commission for UNESCO is organizing a sensitization workshop for to revitalize the Clubs, Centres and Associations of UNESCO on 13-14 October, 2015 at KSMS.

6-8 October, 2015 - Western Indian Ocean Planning meeting for the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2): The Third Western Indian Ocean Planning meeting for the IIOE-2 will be organized by UNESCO Maputo and the UNESCO-IOC Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States in Catembe, Mozambique. The meeting will gather ocean experts from Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Reunion, Seychelles, South Africa, and Tanzania.

8 September, 2015 - International Literacy Day, Literacy for Sustainable Societies: How does literacy affect and contribute in each area of development? How does development in each area can support the promotion of literacy skills? ILD event in East Africa region will bring together high level experts to explore the synergy between literacy and sustainability. 2-5 September 2015 - Workshop on Sustainable management of Africa’s natural resources through the formalization of artisanal and small-scale mining in Eastern and Southern Africa: The countries in Eastern and Southern Africa have use different approach to enforce the new legislation and the experience is different from country to country. Therefore, there is a need for a regional workshop to exchange lessons learned and receive inspiration from other countries in the Eastern and Southern Africa.

2-4 September, 2015 -  Africa Engineering Week in Kenya, Mentoring for more engineers for a secure and sustainable future: UNESCO believes that more people would be attracted to engineering as a career if the role of engineering was more visible and better understood. In this regard, UNESCO and Kenya’s National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) are working to raise awareness on the importance of engineering for sustainable development. Celebrations are taking place from 2nd to 4th September, 2015 at the University of Nairobi grounds.

6-10 August, 2015 - 70 Years Later - Atomic Bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki Exhibition: The exhibition will be a display of 30 posters and streaming of video clips provided by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A demonstration of ‘origami (traditional Japanese paper folding craft) will also take place throughout the exhibition period. Visitors are invited to participate in the making of ‘senbazuru (one-thousand folded origami cranes)’which will later be donated to the cities of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The exhibition aims to support the UN discussion on nuclear weapons, scientific assessment of radioactivity impacts on the environment and human health, as well as the World Heritage concept and the Memory of the World programmes.

27 May, 2015 - International Day of UN Peacekeepers Celebration, Peacekeeping in perspective, reflections from Africa on the past five decades: United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Regional Office in Eastern Africa in Nairobi, together with our stakeholders in Kenya are organizing an interactive panel discussion on Peacekeeping in Africa, in celebrating the contribution of the UN Peacekeepers to peace, security and development in this region. The interactive panel discussion is aimed to generate a public conversation on the experience of peacekeeping in Africa, and to explore its complex challenges leading up to present day peace and security situations.

21 May, 2015 - World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: UNESCO, together with the National Commission for UNESCO, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and sister agencies in the UN, organises a ROUNDTABLE on “Culture and development in the post 2015 Development Agenda: . The roundtable will be interactive in nature, involving speakers on the theme of culture and Dialogues from Kenya”development who will touch upon aspects such as the creative economy, gender equality, youth empowerment as well as the need for synergy and coordination within the context of devolution.

14 May, 2015 - Skills for Life in Somalia - The 2nd Steering committee meeting of Al Maktoum Foundation and UNESCO: This is the follow-up of the first steering committee meeting. As of the project agreement that covers this project, a Steering Committee is going to meet in order to deliberate on the progress made, issues and challenges encountered, and agree on the way forward in terms project management.

28 April, 2015 - Education For All (EFA) Global Action Week and Official Launch in Kenya of the EFA Global Monitoring Report: In 2000, during the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, 164 governments agreed on six-cross cutting goals in order to achieve Education for All by 2015. Kenya was amongst those who committed to the EFA goals. Despite making significant progress, improving access to school for both poor and rich, a new UNESCO report shows it has failed to realise its pledge.

25 March, 2015 - Press Release - International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery: The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and UNESCO, in partnership with sister agencies in the UN (UNDP, OHCHR, UNHCR, UN Women, UNEP, IOM, WHO and UNFPA), propose to hold a Roundtable and an Exhibition on “Women and Slavery” at UNON Gigiri. The Exhibition is expected to run from 24-27 March 2015 at the UN Lobby while the Round Table will be on 25th March from 0930-1300 hours at Conference Room 4. Both the Round Table and the Exhibition interrogate “Women and Slavery” and help us understand the strongly gendered nature of historical and current forms of servitude suffered by women.

The exhibition is unique in that it focuses less on enslaved Africans as victims and more on the ways in which they reshaped their destinies and place in history through the creation of distinct cultures.

10 November, 2014 - World Science Day for Peace and Development 2014: Established by UNESCO in 2001, World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated worldwide annually on 10 November. This year’s theme is ‘Quality Science Education: Ensuring a sustainable future for all‘. By throwing bridges between science and society, the aim is to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science, while underscoring the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

30 October, 2014 - Breaking the Silence: Slave Trade and Slavery in Africa: History, Legacies and the Present: An International Conference on “Slavery in Africa: History, Legacies and Present” was organized at Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi from 27-29th October 2014. With UNESCO as a major partner, the Conference brought together more than 100 participants comprising academia, researchers, experts, and representatives of civil society working in the area of slave trade and slavery from different regions of the world.

21 September, 2014 - International Day of Peace: UNESCO Open Lecture Series vol.1 Regional Interactive Panel Discussion and West Gate Remembrance: UNESCO Regional Office in Eastern Africa, in partnership with sister agencies in the UN (Resident Coordinators Office in Kenya and Somalia, OHCHR, UNDP, UNEP, UNIC, UN Women, UNSOM), is organizing a regional interactive panel discussion to celebrate the International Day of Peace. A discussion will take place surrounding this year’s theme, The Right of Peoples to Peace with distinguished panel of speakers and commentators, and university students from Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda.

5 September, 2014 - UNESCO mentors girls in STEM to mark the Africa Engineering Week: UNESCO Nairobi Office and its partners, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, the National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) and the University of Nairobi organized a mentoring workshop on STEM for high school girls in their first and second years of secondary level education to not only raise their interest in scientific, engineering and technological courses but also to nurture them as Kenya’s future female scientists, engineers and technologists.

8 June, 2014 - UN.KNOWN SPACES: An Artistic Research of the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, New York and Nairobi and their Host Communities: Berlin-based stage designer and director Janina Janke and musician/multimedia artist Maurice de Martin will share a performance-based interaction with music, video and sound recordings designed to spotlight the differences and commonalities between three UN headquarters (Nairobi, New York and Vienna) and their host communities on 8 July 2014, 12:30-2:00 PM, at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Gigiri.

This Science caféwill discuss the meaning of this abolition and the contemporary challenges posed by thelegacies of slavery. A short documentary will precede the discussions.

13 May, 2014 - Media Kit for the Re-thatching Launch of the Reconstruction of Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga: Architectural masterpiece of the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi, Uganda, World Heritage property in Danger. Following the tragic fire in 2010 that completely destroyed the main building (Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga) and led to inscription on the List of World Heritage in Danger, UNESCO mobilized the international community to help safeguard the site.

The Cabinet Secretaryfor Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi will preside over the officiallaunch of the Report: “Teaching and learning: Achieving quality for all.”

27 April, 2014 - Kenyan event calls for a ‘Vote for Education’ for the next generationEFA Global Action Week and Official Launch in Kenya of the EFA Global Monitoring Report: The Report will be launched at an event on 28 April at the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi during this year’s EFA Global Action Week under the theme The Right to Education Post-2015.
