UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa Newsletter: January - June 2015, Volume I, Issue 2

I welcome you to this edition of our newsletter. Although the office has been making progress and contributions towards achieving the MDGs and in advocating for peace and sustainable development, we also witnessed several setbacks. I would like to offer my sincerest prayer for those who lost their lives and express my utmost sympathy to all those who have been affected by the series of terrorist attacks.  

UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa Newsletter - Special Edition: 2014 Kenya Year in Review January, Volume I, Issue 1

The 2014 marked the 50 years of collaboration and partnership for Kenya and UNESCO, where Kenya joined UNESCO as the 73rd Member in 1964. At the international and regional level, Kenya has contributed to the work of UNESCO through substantive participation in the organization’s Governing Body and has played a prominent role through membership with inter-governmental commissions.

KENYA UNESCO Clubs: For a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence A Practical Guide

UNESCO Clubs were born of individual initiative from the beginning to the present day they have been set up in answer to a widespread feeling among their members of the need to participate more actively in international life, in harmony with UNESCO’s approach and within its fields of competence. Their activities are directed towards the ideals set forth in the Preamble to the UNESCO Constitution.

 

Kenya Groundwater Mapping Programme (KGMP) 

KGMP is building a knowledge base of Kenya’s groundwater resources by improving the scientific knowledge on the nation’s groundwater wealth. The activities include a groundwater resources assessment and building the capacity of local and national actors by delivering tools to effectively and sustainability manage groundwater resources.  

UNESCO Programmes in Kenya (2014-2017)

UNESCO’s work in Kenya aims to contribute to peace and sustainable development in respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. In Kenya, UNESCO achieves these goals by mobilising for education, pursuing scientific cooperation, building inter-cultural understanding, and protecting freedom of expression. UNESCO’s programmes are interlinked to the Kenya Vision 2030 and UNDAF to increase the relevance and effectiveness of partners’ cooperation.

UNESCO Programmes in Somalia (2013-2014)

UNESCO’s work in Somalia aims to contribute to peace, security and development in respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. To achieve this, UNESCO applies its expertise to education, sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO’s programmes are interlinked to the Somali Compact, Somaliland Special arrangement, and Puntland 5-year Development Plan to increase the relevance and effectiveness of partners’ cooperation in Somalia.

 

UNESCO’s Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa

This Initiative aims to support the development of the next generation of Earth scientists in Africa who are equipped with the necessary tools, networks and perspectives to apply sound science to solving and bene ting from the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development. The opportunities in the Earth sciences are great, starting with traditional mineral extraction and extending into environmental management such as climate change adaptation, prevention of natural hazards, and ensuring access to drinking water.

 

Living together with the Ocean art competition (2014)

The documentation of Africa-wide art competition for children and youths of all ages to celebrate the Word Oceans Day and African Day of Ocean and Seas. The project were used as an opportunity to reach out to as many people as possible to raise awareness about the oceans importance on our livelihoods and on our personal connection with the sea under the theme “Living together with the Ocean”. 

 

Stolen Apes: The Illicit Trade in Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Bonobos and Orangutans (2013)

The illegal trade that sees almost 3,000 live great apes lost from the forests of Africa and Southeast Asia each year is increasingly impacting wild populations as links to organized crime grows stronger. This brochure is the first report to analyze the scale and scope of the illegal trade and highlights the growing links to sophisticated trans-boundary crime networks, which law enforcement networks are struggling to contain.

 

UNESCO IPDC: Maximizing Community Development - Production and sharing of local content by community media groups in Kenya

Community Media continues to be an active participant in the pursuit of sustainable development of communities and the larger society. This is more so when community media sticks to its core mandate of reflecting and shaping content which is generated from the developmental aspirations of their target communities, be it a geographic or a community of interest.
