11 Aug 2015 - Photo exhibit tells stories of South Sudan: The struggles and triumphs of ordinary people in South Sudan have been displayed in a photo exhibit in Juba supported by the UN cultural agency, UNESCO. Twenty young journalists from the African country showcased pictures they took after completing a two-week photojournalism workshop on how to report on conflicts in a sensitive way.

That's the message coming out of South Sudan on the Day of the African Child, celebrated on 16 June; A partnership between a UN agency and one of the world's top football clubs is improving the lives of children in the Central African Republic; The Government of Tanzania has taken important steps to tackle the problem of ritualistic violence against people living with albinism, but challenges remain.

21 May 2015 - Cultural heritage benefiting Kenya communities: People in Kenya are benefiting in significant ways from cultural heritage sites according to the Director General of the National Museums of Kenya. Dr Mzalendo Kibunjia was speaking in Nairobi on the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

19 May 2015 - Al-Shabaab expected to attempt to "derail" political process in Somalia: The Al-Shabaab terrorist group is expected to attempt to "derail" the political process in Somalia according to the United Nation's most senior official in the country. Nicholas Kay made the comment in his regular address to the UN Security Council on the situation in the Horn of Africa country.

6 Apr 2015 - Radio listener clubs for women set up in South Sudan: Radio listener clubs for women have been established in the towns of Rumbek and Wau in South Sudan. The UN cultural agency (UNESCO) is working with the South Sudan Women's General Association and a local radio station to promote freedom of expression for women in the country through the use of radio.

25 Feb 2015 - East African nations to share tips on fighting poverty, inequality: Representatives of East African nations are meeting in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi to share best practices on fighting poverty and inequality. The forum of Ministers of Social Development organized by the UN education and cultural agency UNESCO is the first of its kind.

13 Feb 2015 - Radio "wonderful tool" for young people: In recognition of the power of the medium, the theme for this year's World Radio Day, which is observed on 13 February each year is "Youth and Radio". The UN cultural agency (UNESCO) says it chose this theme in order to promote greater participation of youth in radio, not only as listeners, but as producers and broadcasters.

6 Feb 2015 - Actor Forest Whitaker highlights humanitarian crisis South Sudan: Forest Whitaker who is a UN Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, arrived on Friday in the civil war-torn country with the UN's top humanitarian official, Valerie Amos. Together they will assess the situation on the ground and highlight the urgent needs of the population.

29 Jan 2015 - UN denounces killing of journalists: The recent killings of journalists in South Sudan and in Iraq have been denounced by the United Nations Cultural Agency, UNESCO. The Director-General Irina Bokova called on governments on Thursday to improve the safety of media workers in the country.

19 Jan 2015 - One in five adolescents worldwide is not in school: Around 63 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 years are denied their right to an education, according to a new joint report from the UN educational agency (UNESCO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). The report released on Monday shows that globally, one in five adolescents is not in school compared to almost 1 in 10 primary school-age children.

15 Jan 2015 - UN cultural agency rolls out literacy programs in South Sudan: Literacy programs are being rolled out in South Sudan to help teach as many people to read and write as possible, according to an education specialist with the UN cultural agency. Small libraries, literacy centers and temporary learning spaces for the displaced populations are being built by UNESCO to boost literacy.

16 Dec 2014 - Broadband is "highway" to inclusivity: Fred Matiang’i, the Minister of Information, Communication and Technology is a senior government official who attended a recent meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Doha, Qatar. He said all aspects of people's lives are going to be driven by data and the way it is managed.

28 Nov 2014 - "Intangible" cultural heritage preserved by UNESCO: Thirty-four new cultural heritage traditions have been inscribed on a list to ensure their preservation. An intergovernmental committee has been meeting this week to discuss what is called the "safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage".

10 Nov 2014 - Conference on Education for Sustainable Development opens in Japan: Ms Bokova was speaking at the opening of a conference to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Nagoya, Japan. The UN Cultural Agency UNESCO and the Government of Japan are the organizers of this three-day event.

10 Nov 2014 - Online digital platform to help students access latest science information: A free online science education resource has been launched by the UN Cultural Agency (UNESCO) for students from disadvantaged regions around the world. The World Library of Science or WLoS was created to help them access the latest science information, share experiences and learn through discussion with their peers.

27 Oct 2014 - World at risk of losing audiovisual heritage: UNESCO: The world is at risk of losing its audiovisual heritage of sound recordings and moving images due to neglect, natural decay, technological obsolescence and deliberate destruction. This warning has come from the UN cultural agency, UNESCO on World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, observed on 27 October each year.

5 Oct 2014 - Investing in teachers is to invest in the future: UNESCO: Teachers are an investment for the future of countries. That's the message of the UN's educational organization, UNESCO, on this year's World Teacher's Day.

5 Oct 2014 - Sub-Saharan Africa needs more qualified teachers: To mark World Teachers Day, which is observed on 5 October, UNESCO is on Monday publishing a new paper that shows that at least 93 countries have an acute teacher shortage. UNESCO points out that what is needed is quality education imparted by qualified teachers which many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa don't have.

23 Aug 2014 - Slavery heritage reminds world all human beings are created equal: 23 August is the International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition. UNESCO’s Slave Route Project, which aims to accelerate research and raise awareness of the history of slavery and its' consequences, has also just turned 20.

6 Aug 2014 - UN chief calls for progress in eliminating nuclear weapons: Countries with nuclear weapons have been urged to make immediate and concrete progress in the elimination of these weapons of mass destruction. The call was made by UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday in his message to mark the anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese City of Hiroshima.

1 Aug 2014 - Massai use radio as "door" to bring their issues to the open: The Maasai people in the Ngorongoro District of Tanzania are using radio to air their concerns and reach out to fellow Tanzanians so their particular situation can be better understood. The Maasai pastoralists are concerned about being pushed out of grazing areas to make way for tourism. Thanks to the UN cultural agency (UNESCO), a team has been at work since last year broadcasting from the district.

21 Jul 2014 - "Stepping up the Pace" to reverse the trajectory of HIV: An international conference on AIDS is gathering under the theme of "Stepping up the Pace" to ensure that the pace increases to reverse the trajectory of the epidemic. Organized by UNESCO and taking place in Melbourne, Australia, the 20th International AIDS Conference is scheduled from 20 to 25 July.

30 May 2014 - Sailors partner with UNESCO on ocean research: A partnership between a Spanish sailing organization and the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO, aimed at contributing to scientific ocean research, is being launched at the UN on Friday. The agreement between the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and the Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing has been described as "an unprecedented alliance between the sailing and scientific communities."

15 May 2014 - Over 30 million children in Africa are out of school: UNESCO: More than 30 million children in Africa are out of school, according to a report launched by the Tanzanian government and the UN cultural agency (UNESCO) in Dar es Salaam on Thursday. The 2014 Education for All Global Monitoring Report identifies the shortage of quality teachers as the key problem in the efforts to provide children with quality education.

30 Apr 2014 - International Jazz Day highlights jazz's "diplomatic role": Every year on 30 April, International Jazz Day brings together communities, artists, historians and jazz enthusiasts to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots.

23 Apr 2014 - Mobile technology facilitates literacy in developing countries: UNESCO: Mobile technology is facilitating literacy in developing countries, according to a report by the United Nations cultural agency (UNESCO). The report, "Reading in the Mobile Era" was published on the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, which is observed on 23 April each year.

23 Apr 2014 - Shipwrecks offer "huge potential" for small island states: Shipwrecks and other types of underwater cultural heritage offer "huge potential" for small island states according to a senior government archaeologist from the Caribbean. Experts from around the world have been gathering in New York to discuss how heritage sites could help in the development of small island economies.

25 Mar 2014 - Technological progress may threaten freedom of expression: Advances in technology may threaten freedom of expression across the world, the UN's cultural organization, UNESCO has warned. It says the "increasing control" of online content by Internet companies, such as search engines and social media networks, threatens transparency in the free flow of information.

25 Mar 2014 - Victims of Transatlantic slave trade remembered: "Victory over Slavery: Haiti and Beyond" is the theme for this year’s International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It pays tribute to the revolt by slaves in the French colony on the Island of Hispaniola which culminated in the abolition of slavery and establishment of the Republic of Haiti 210 years ago.

19 Mar 2014 - Achievements of women in science recognised through award: Young Women around the world, especially those in the least developed countries, are being encouraged to apply for a fellowship scheme to further their scientific research. The scheme is being launched by the UN' cultural agency, UNESCO, on Wednesday with a view to promote the contribution of young women in the field of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology.

27 Feb 2014 - Women encouraged to become journalists in South Sudan: Women are being encouraged to enter journalism in South Sudan bucking a trend which has typically seen only men employed as journalists. The Union of Journalists in South Sudan is actively encouraging women to get involved.

21 Feb 2014 - Local languages provide "access to scientific knowledge": UNESCO: The importance of local languages in providing access to scientific knowledge is being highlighted by the UN's cultural agency, UNESCO on Friday. International Mother Language Day, which is marked on 21 February each year, celebrates multilingualism and linguistic and cultural diversity across the world.

17 Feb 2014 - Mobile technologies to aid teaching and learning: The potential for mobile technologies to aid teaching and learning is being examined by the UN's cultural organization, UNESCO in Paris, France. The annual Mobile Learning Week will focus on how cell phones and other communication technologies can boost learning in regions where traditional educational resources are lacking.

13 Feb 2014 - Gender equality promoted on UN's World Radio Day: Radio broadcasting is being promoted as a key way to furthergender equality and women's empowerment around the world. On World Radio Day on Thursday, the UN's cultural organization, UNESCO , is raising awareness of the power of radio to promote access to information and the freedom of expression as a means to boost equality.

12 Feb 2014 - State of global press freedom report released at UN: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will present the 2014 edition of its annual assessment on the state of press freedom at the United Nations in New York. The launch of the report entitled "Attacks on the Press: Journalism on the World's Frontlines" will be followed by a briefing to the press.

13 Jan 2014 - Kenya urged to respect indigenous rights: The Kenyan Government has been urged by a UN independent expert to respect the rights of an indigenous group which is due to be evicted from its land. James Anaya, expressed what he called deep concern about reports that police are poised to forcibly evict the Sengwer people from their homes in the Embobut Forest in western Kenya.

10 Jan 2014 - UN partnership wants mountains included in sustainable development goals: An alliance that brings together the United Nations, governments, civil society and the private sector, wants to see more global action to improve the lives of mountain communities and protect mountain environments. The Mountain Partnership believes mountains should be included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an outcome of the Rio+20 conference held last year in Brazil.

4 Oct 2013 - World needs more teachers, quality education: UN agencies: The world will need to recruit more than five million teachers if the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of universal primary education is to be achieved by the 2015 deadline, according to four UN agencies. In a message marking World Teachers' Day, observed this Saturday (5 October), they say this challenge goes beyond numbers as more teachers must also mean better quality education through training and support.

3 Oct 2013 - UNESCO study shows Africa and Arab States are worst hit by teacher shortage: One point six million additional teachers will be required to achieve universal primary education by 2015, and this number will rise to 3.3 million by 2030, according to a report published by UNESCO's Institute for Statistics (UIS) on the occasion of World Teachers Day, to be celebrated on 5 October.

23 Aug 2013 - The slave trade is not merely a thing of the past: it's our history: Bokova: The slave trade reduced millions of human beings to mere chattels and was a crime of universal scope that shook the very foundations of civilization, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said in a message on the occasion of the International Day of the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

26 Jun 2013 - UNESCO chief condemns murder of Ugandan journalist: The head of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is urging authorities in Uganda to fully investigate the murder of a local journalist and to bring those responsible for his death to justice.

3 May 2013 - Journalists call for more protection on World Press Freedom Day: Journalists must be able work in safety because when this happens, the whole world benefits, says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a speech marking World Press Freedom Day, observed on 3 May.

3 May 2013 - UN observes World Press Freedom Day on 3 May: The United Nations on Friday observed World Press Freedom Day, under the theme "Safe to Speak: Ensuring the Safety of Journalists and Media Workers." The day, marked on 3 May each year, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO to draw attention to the situation of journalists and media workers.

21 Feb 2013 - Network of community radios is registered in Tanzania: Earlier this week, members of the Community Media Network in Tanzania-COMNETA rejoiced after their network received official registration from the Government of Tanzania. The network comprises about 25 community radios operating in the most rural settings of Tanzania, home to over 44 million people and more than 126 ethnic groups.

21 Feb 2013 - International Mother Language Day encourages mother tongue education: Thursday, February 21st is being observed as International Mother Language Day. This year, the theme for the Day is exploring the links between languages and books. Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General notes that in some countries, the dearth of books and textbooks in local languages hampers development and social inclusion and represents a violation of the right to freedom of expression.

13 Feb 2013 - Promoting youth participation on World Radio Day: Advances in technology have brought new ways to communicate with each other, but radio remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide. That's according to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which is behind the annual observance of World Radio Day on 13 February.

13 Feb 2013 - It’s World Radio Day: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that from short-wave to FM to satellite transmission – radio connects people wherever they are. He pointed out that in conflict situations and times of crisis, radio is a lifeline for vulnerable communities.

11 Feb 2013 - International Year of Water Cooperation launched: The world is inching toward a water crisis as the number of users increases dramatically. That warning was made on Monday by Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary during the launch of the International Year of Water Cooperation at UN Headquarters in New York.

6 Feb 2013 - Forest Whitaker talks to a young orphan girl about her dreams of becoming a peace-builder: Forest Whitaker, an American actor and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador led workshops on peace-building and conflict resolution at Hope North, in northern Uganda in December 2012. Hope North is a rehabilitation campus in Masinde where refugees, orphans and former child soldiers rebuild their lives through education and vocational training.

16 Jan 2013 - UNESCO chief calls for comprehensive action to harness full power of renewable energy: UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, told the Sixth World Future Energy Summit and the International Renewable Energy Ministerial Panel on "Building National Frameworks for Renewable Energy" in Abu Dhabi that "harnessing the full power of renewable energy requires comprehensive, across-the-board action to develop human resources, to build institutional capacity, to promote local innovation and increase scientific knowledge adapted to different contexts and needs.
