The calabrian lira is an age-old stringed musical bow whose origin lies between high and late Middle Ages. It’s a real ancestor of the violin. Has no keyboard, no capotasto and is carved from a single block of carved wood. The keys are placed in sagittal way and “soul” is mobile, stuck under the bridge.
This instrument has come down to us through oral cultures of the Mediterranean keeping substantially unchanged to Byzantine centuries. The visceral, primitive sound of the instrument and its unmistakable “attack” makes it a fascinating and evocative.
In the years ’ 80 of XX century was considered practically disappeared in Calabria.

Art exhibition of schoolchildren01-12-2012/31-07-2013, Viljandi, Tallinn (Estonia)
The project has 3 stages:
1) In December 2012 information day and practical training for the art teachers was organized (37 schools all over Estonia participated). The teachers received information about ICH, some inspiration about how to study it with children and practical training about the tools of contemporary art in a classroom.
2) The pupils aged 14-19 made research into the ICH of their own home region. They presented the findings to schoolmates together with an idea of how they intend to interpret this knowledge for their future artwork that was to be realized with the tools of contemporary art. Each school selects one piece of art to send to the national exhibition and makes a local exhibition of other works.
3) On 24 May the exhibition will be opened in Viljandi Art Gallery. The authors and teachers will put up their works, participate in the ICH workshops and concert and enjoy the festive opening of the exhibition. Later the exhibition can be seen in the capital city of Tallinn and in the web www.unesco.ee/galerii

Scotland’s Living Heritage(s): a Global Perspective29-05-2013, Edinburgh (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
Scotland has enthusiastically embraced the concept of heritage, and has invested significantly in the restoration of historic and listed buildings. An emphasis on safeguarding historic structures reflects the traditional British perspective, which largely regarded heritage in terms the built environment. This emphasis is at odds with the Gaelic term dúchas, which implies a collective heritage: one that connects living people to particular places. Recent developments in Scotland indicate that perspectives on heritage have begun to embrace living – as well as material – dimensions of heritage. With particular reference to UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), this inaugural lecture explores the current challenges faced by tradition-bearers and custodians of living heritage in Scotland, Europe and further afield.
