A Special Centenary Journey Trail: Epic Collections, Documentations, and Studies in China

15-11-2013/30-12-2013 Dongcheng District, Beijing (China)

At UNESCO’s initiative for “Sharing Activities” to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the 2003 Convention, the Institute of Ethnic Literature, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has been preparing a digital exhibition titled “A Special Centenary Journey Trail: Epic Collections, Documentations, and Studies in China,” which will be launched on November 15, 2013 in Beijing. The exhibition aimed at showing the general scholarship in epic studies. With the technical reinforcement of China Wisdom, it will be largely based upon the multiform outcomes from “Archives of China Ethnic Minorities’ Oral Traditions,” a long-term project at CASS level whose construction has been currently underway at the Institute. The General goals for the Exhibition are: (1) to promote the mutual understanding of cultural diversity and creativity; (2) to strengthen international academic discourse on living epic traditions; (3) to facilitate a better data sharing in the domain of the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage; (4) to enhance the internationalized network among epic professionals and institutions. The exhibition will primarily cover books and journals concerning epic studies in China (and beyond) during the past 10 decades, along with the first-hand audio-video records of live epic performance through fieldwork carried out by IEL epic researchers.
