UN Brazil and the Federal Government celebrate International Youth Day with debate about the rights of young people
Discussion on the Youth Statute as well as artistic and cultural presentations will be included in the commemorative activities
Wednesday, August 12, the world celebrates International Youth Day. As part of the commemorations, the UN System in Brazil Youth Advisory Group, — comprised by the UN System agencies, the National Youth Secretariat (SNJ) and the National Youth Council (CONJUVE) — will hold a seminar called From Law into Practice: two years of the Youth Statute and Directions for its implementation in Brasilia. The event will provide a discussion forum about the legitimacy and expansion of the rights of Brazilian youth and how to ensure investment in young people. The Youth Statute, which will celebrate its second anniversary in August 2015, determines the rights of young people that should be guaranteed and promoted by the Brazilian Federal Government.
This will be an encounter between leading players in the promotion of the youth agenda. The seminar will have a "Talk Show" format with the participation of Jorge Chediek, the UN Resident Coordinator in Brazil; Gabriel Medina, the National Youth Secretary; Paul Gabriel Nacif, Secretary for Continuing Education, Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion at the Ministry of Education; Claudia Veloso Guimarães, Director of Educational Policy for Young People at the Ministry of Education; Walmir Junior, representative of Enegrecer, the national black youth collective, and advisor to CONJUVE; as well as representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Health, the Secretariat for Racial Equality Policy and Promotion and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Young people from different regions of the country, representing various networks and collectives, will make up the audience and raise issues related to the expectations and challenges for the Statute.
It will be hard to achieve social and economic advances in the coming years without making the right investments in the largest population of young people in history: There are more than 1.8 billion young people in the world, and more than 52 million in Brazil. Having this unprecedented number of young people in the country and in the world is a unique historical moment to be channelled towards achieving inclusive and sustainable development. For this population to be able to transform their current realities and the fate of their nations it is crucial that laws and national public policies be geared towards opening their way forward.
Artistic and cultural presentation
The expression and force of hip hop in securing the rights of the Brazilian young people will be recognised during the International Youth Day celebrations. Commencing at 9am, the Ruas collective will begin a cultural-artistic presentation preparing a work in graffiti on the 11 arms of Youth Statute. The graffiti panel will be donated by the United Nations to the Brazilian Government after the "Talk Show" as a memorial of the 2015
International Youth Day Celebrations
During the seminar, the group will put on dance presentations and MC battles.International Youth DayOn December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared 12 August as International Youth Day. The celebration aims to promote discussion and awareness of topics related to the youth agenda. For the United Nations, young people are a force for transformation and should play a key role in the process of building sustainable development
Youth Advisory Group
The UN Youth Advisory Group comprises ten United Nations System agencies in Brazil (UNFPA, UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, UN Women, UNODC, ILO, UNAIDS, UN-Habitat and UNV), as well as the National Youth Secretariat and civil society organizations represented by CONJUVE.
