Brazil is also involved in the LIFE - UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment. LIFE is a global strategic framework for the implementation of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012), in order to meet the Education for All (EFA) goals, with particular focus on adult literacy and out-of-school children.
LIFE is the UNESCO strategy focused on the empowerment of students through local practices that may be informed by means of research based on evidences. It has been implemented in 35 countries with literacy rates below 50% or with population with more than 10 million illiterates.
Working at a global scale, UNESCO calls the international and national attention on the importance the literacy – a subject of rare political good-will politics and of very few resources. The operations of LIFE are directed to each country adjusted to its needs and specific priorities and correspondent to its national capacities.
The Program is being implemented for a period of 10 years, divided in three gradual phases: the first phase started in 2006, the second started in 2008, and third in 2010. In 2011, an evaluation of the Program was made. From 2010 to 2015, the emphasis is to guarantee sustainability of what it was reached in the three phases.
