UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova to launch “#Unite4Heritage” campaign in Baghdad, Iraq, on 28 March

A campaign to mobilise global support for the protection of cultural heritage will be launched by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in Baghdad, Iraq on Saturday, 28 March.

#Unite4Heritage will use the power of social networks to create a global movement for protecting and safeguarding heritage under threat, in Iraq and elsewhere, providing  a counter-narrative to sectarian propaganda.

The launch will take place at 2:15 pm at the University of Baghdad, with students, faculty members and high level government authorities. A press conference will follow the launch event.

Her one day official visit will also include meetings with the Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salim Al-Jabouri.

During her stay in Baghdad, the Director-General will address the opening of the ‘First Islamic Conference for Secretary Generals for National Commissions at the member states of ISESCO’ organized by ISESCO and hosted by the Ministry of Education of Iraq.

Ms Bokova’s visit to Iraq also includes the launch of the project “Preventive conservation of Iraq’s museum collections and cultural heritage sites at imminent risk,” supported by Japan, at 1 pm, at the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad, with the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Adel Fahad Shershab and the Ambassador of Japan to Iraq.
