Global network of facilitators

The facilitators in UNESCO’s network are experts specialized in the field of intangible cultural heritage around the world. Overall, 43% of the facilitators are from Africa and 40% are women. To find out more about the facilitators and their areas of expertise, please use the search tool on the right.

The facilitators are familiar with the UNESCO tools and training materials, which they adapt to local contexts and use to deliver training and capacity-building services, such as needs assessments, technical assistance and policy advice, at the country level.

Upgrading training capacities of the facilitators is an important aspect of the Convention’s capacity-building programme. Facilitators and culture officers from UNESCO field offices share lessons learnt and recommendations at regular review meetings. Dedicated webpages for sharing news, information and training materials provide additional support.

Mr Abderrahman Ayoub is a researcher, member of the National Heritage Institute of Tunisia (INP), Assistant Director for intangible cultural heritage till 2012. He holds a PhD. in Linguistics and has been conducting research for many years on oral literature, ethnography and arts in Tunisia, and some countries of Maghreb and the Arab world. He is the author of many publications, especially on the Arab epic, the Banâ Hilâl feat, traditional games in Tunisia (he founded the thesaurus of heritage games) and intangible cultural heritage. He is author of the Guide for managers of Human Living Treasures (published by UNESCO Rabat Office, ISESCO and the IMRS, 2006-7) and the Guide of intangible cultural heritage (ISESCO, 2010-2011 s.p.). In 2009 he moderates training workshops in Sharja (United Arab Emirates) and Amman (Jordan) on the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Mr David Brown, Senior Research Fellow at the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, is a Historian that has over 20 years experience in conducting community based documentation and inventorying of intangible cultural heritage. He was part of the Jamaican national committee that prepared the nomination file which in 2003 resulted in the UNESCO declaration of the Musical Heritage of the Moore Town Maroons of Jamaica as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Ms Géraldine Chatelard is a historian and anthropologist of the contemporary Middle East, and an associate researcher at the French Institute for the Near East. She specialises in rural development, particularly among former nomadic communities, and the relations between local knowledge and environmental protection. She also has a long experience in sustainable management of natural and cultural – both tangible and intangible – heritage for tourism. She has worked with several international and national organisations, including UNESCO Iraq Office where she was Culture Programme Specialist from 2011 to 2014. She was actively involved in the MEDLIHER project which aimed to promote the implementation of the Intangible Heritage Convention in the Mediterranean region, and in the Euromed Heritage project.

Mr Stephen Chifunyise is a former Permanent Secretary for Education, Sport and Culture in Zimbabwe and former member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Mr. Illia Fetysov is a well-known Ukrainian researcher of intangible cultural heritage, and leader of "Bozhychi" Folk Ensemble (since 1999) and School of Traditional Folkdances (since 2005). Specializing in Near Eastern Cultures and Languages, Mr Hani Hayajneh is a professor at the faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. He also serves as Director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Center of Al-Hussein Bin Talal University. Tojo Yharimanana Rakotomalala, de nationalité malgache, est Expert dans des domaines

variés, notamment recherche qualitative et quantitative, développement local, emploi,
développement des compétences, culture et communication sociale. Depuis 2012, elle est
membre de la Banque d’Experts de la Convention 2005 de l’UNESCO. Parmi les travaux
effectués avec les organismes nationaux et internationaux, elle a réalisé l’état des lieux des
politiques, des structures et des activités culturelles et du développement culturel à Madagascar, la
formulation des politiques nationales et des stratégies régionales de l’emploi, la formulation de la
stratégie de développement des compétences dans le secteur tourisme-hôtellerie-restauration,
l’évaluation des dispositifs de formation. Elle a formulé des projets et programmes de
développement et exercé les fonctions métier de Coordonnatrice de projet touchant l’emploi
des jeunes et le développement communautaire.

Min Zhang has served the Ministry of Culture of China since 1989, responsible for bilateral and multilateral cultural programmes. She participated in all the meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee and General Assembly of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage from 2006 to 2012. Detached to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Section of UNESCO from 2010 to 2013, she worked in the capacity-building unit and was involved in the work of designing the training curriculum, organizing a series of training of trainers workshops and the first review meeting of the global capacity-building strategy, designing and implementing concrete capacity-building projects at national level in Asia-Pacific and the Southern African region.
