Samoa pursues its march towards safeguarding intangible heritage

Samoa is getting ready this week to host in its capital Apia another round of capacity-building activities, from 16 to 20 November 2015. This is possible thanks to the continued generous contribution of Japan to implement the second phase of the project Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage through the Strengthening of National Capacities in Asia and the Pacific.
During the whole week ministry and local officials, national experts and NGOs will be trained by two UNESCO-accredited facilitators on how to prepare nomination files for the Urgent Safeguarding List and Representative List, proposals for the Register of Best Practices and requests for international assistance. The approach taken is that the best way to learn how to prepare international files is to understand how they will later be evaluated and examined. This is done primarily through practical and participatory sessions.
Participants will explore the different international mechanisms established by the Convention and their appropriate and effective use. Following an overview of the nomination processes, practical sessions will help them to understand what a complete nomination or request entails and how the evaluation process will later be carried out in order to increase the possibility of preparing comprehensive files for future submissions.
