In 2016, over 54 of African Member States of UNESCO will be commemorating the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Fund by addressing challenges, opportunities and prospects they are facing in the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
In the framework of the 38th session of the General Conference, the UNESCO African Group, together with the World Heritage Center, is organising a commemoration for the 10th anniversary of the creation of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF).

The event will be an opportunity for the African people and the international community to renew their commitment to:

• safeguarding African heritage;
• monitoring the state of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention on the continent;
• identifying the main challenges of safeguarding and development on the continent in order to suggest sustainable solutions;
• raising awareness among professionals of heritage, communities and young people.

The ceremony will take place in the presence of the UNESCO Director-General, the African Group President, the AWHF President and the President of the General Conference. It will lead to a video projection on African World Heritage, an artistic showcase led by an African storyteller and finally to the launch of the book « Femmes africaines, panafricanisme et renaissance africaine ».

The event will take place November 12 at 18h00 at the Cafeteria Fontenoy (7th floor)
