UNESCO, with the support of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, from the Government of Germany, and in cooperation with the Wildlife Conservation Society has developed climate change adaptation and mitigation measures aimed at protecting Indonesia’s natural world heritage and delivering global climate change benefits.

To this aim, UNESCO Jakarta has developed a Carbon-financed Toolkit for Forest Protection in TRHS which is helping to inform and support local government in the establishment of carbon trading projects in Indonesia. It includes three major components such as GIS-like interface to prioritize area with the most potential for carbon trade; legal requirements for the establishment of carbon-financed projects; and considerations on the establishment of state-owned limited liability companies to manage carbon-financed projects.

In addition, UNESCO has also completed a Geographical Information System (GIS) database through remote sensing analysis for mapping forest cover and loss across Sumatra, a vulnerable analysis and risk assessment of ecological response of biodiversity to climate change, and legal and policy assessment to better measure adaptation and mitigation approaches.
