Smithsonian Institution

Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park, and nine research facilities. The Institution was established for the “increase and diffusion of knowledge” and is dedicated to the understanding and preserving humanity’s cultural heritage, encouraging contemporary cultural creativity, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and understanding and sustaining the planet’s biodiversity. 

 "Protection, Preservation and Prosperity: Stories of World Heritage"

The Project is developed to recognize the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and is a comprehensive bilingual (English/French) online platform consisting of a virtual exhibition hosted by the Smithsonian with a link to UNESCO’s website and mobile experience consisting of an app and mobile website for remote mobile Internet users.

Content for the Project has been developed by the World Heritage Centre and the Smithsonian in close collaboration, and it consists primarily of images, audio, and video content from the Smithsonian and the World Heritage collections.
