A reactive monitoring mission by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) to the assess the state of conservation of the “Tasmanian Wilderness” World Heritage site will take place from 23 to 29 November, at the invitation of Australia and in keeping with the request made by the World Heritage Committee at its 39th session in 2015.

In line with World Heritage Committee Decision 39 COM 7B.35 (see http://whc.unesco.org/archive/2015/whc15-39com-19-en.pdf), the monitoring mission will assess the overall state of conservation of the property and provide advice for the revision of its management plan. It will notably survey the cultural attributes of the site and provide recommendations as to the re-drafting of its retrospective Statement of Outstanding Universal Value. The mission will hold consultations with the Australian authorities at both national and local levels and all other relevant stakeholders, including NGOs.

The mission team will prepare a report that sets out recommendations for review by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, ICOMOS and IUCN. The final report and the working documents on this item will be examined by the World Heritage Committee at its 40th session, which will take place from 10 to 20 July 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey (see http://whc.unesco.org/en/sessions/40COM).
