New initiatives related to biodiversity put economics in the forefront to raise awareness for conservation needs, and to link biodiversity with sustainable development and poverty reduction. These initiatives value ecosystem services (e.g. Sukhdev Study), identify biodiversity business opportunities (e.g. IUCN, Shell, et al Study) or develop appropriate economic instruments and policies. By bringing together expertise from a number of these initiatives, this workshop aims to contribute to mutual exchange, to stimulate joint learning from different approaches and case studies and to identify knowledge gaps and needs for action.

The workshop is the third in a series of events carried out by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation on linking nature conservation and poverty reduction.
