Malaysia joined UNESCO on 16 June 1958. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 3rd session of the Asia Pacific Information Network (APIN) was held in Malaysia in 2007. APIN is guided by the Information for All Programme (IFAP) and helps countries work jointly towards building knowledge societies.

Offering high biodiversity, the Gunung Mulu National Park (52,864 hectares), in the state of Sarawak Borneo, is the most intensely studied tropical karst region in the world. The park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2000.

The Humid Tropics Hydrology and Water Resources Centre for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, better known as HTC Kuala Lumpur, was established under the auspices of UNESCO.

In the field of intangible and oral heritage, Mak Yong Theatre was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
