Dae Joon Hwang

Mr. Dae Joon Hwang has been with the College of Information and Communication Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University (Seoul, Korea) since March 1987. He represented Korean higher education institutions as the Secretary General of the Korean Council for University Education between May 2011 and April 2013. He served as President of the Korea Education Research and Information Service (KERIS) from July 2004 to April 2008. While holding this position he promoted innovations in educational system, curriculum design, and pedagogy development. He summarized Korean best practice in ICT in education in the monograph “E-Learning in Korea” published by UNESCO IITE in November 2011.

As international recognition on his contribution to e-learning and ICT in education, he was called to take posts in national and global bodies: Advisory Board Member of the Minister of Education, Chairman of IMS Korea and a Member of the Executive Strategic Council of IMS Global (Washington DC, USA). He is one of the Presidential Committee Member of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. He served as an international consultant of the Ministry of Education, Thailand. He was awarded the 1st UNESCO Grand Prize in ICT in Education in January 2007 and a Gold Medal in Education from the French Government in May 2008. He is an Honorary Doctor of the Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics, and Informatics since June 2009.

Prof. Hwang has published over 100 papers in international journals and proceedings and authored 7 books. He delivered more than 40 keynote speeches at international conferences and high-level forums on ICT in education and on smart education.

Prof. Hwang has been Governing Board member of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (Moscow, Russia) since September 2009.

His research interests include innovation in education through ICT in education, design of an ecological platform for smart and open education, open access to educational resources (OER, OCW, MOOCs), learning measurement, cloud computing, and Internet of Things.
