Nepalese Version of UNESCO Guide for Journalists Published

A Nepalese version of UNESCO's "Practical Guide for Journalists", produced with UNESCO's support, was launched at the Center for Human Rights and Democratic Studies (CEHURDES) in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu last Monday. The launching event was accompanied by a debate on reporting in conflict areas.
Krishna Jung Rayamajhi, former Judge at the Nepali Supreme Court officially released the publication stating that it would be useful tool to "tackle the problems faced by the journalists and free expression activists". Other speakers at the event were senior journalist Ram Krishna Regmi, the translator of the Guide, Judge Hari Bansa Tipathi and the chairperson of the human rights organization INSEC, Subodh Raj Pyakurel.
Shobhakar Budhathoki, General Secretary of CEHURDES stressed the importance of the publication and its relevance to conflict news reporting. The debate was chaired by CEHURDES Vice chairperson Khadga Sen Oli.
More than 60 participants, journalists, human rights activists, lawyers, intellectuals and other members of civil society attended in the event.
The "Practical Guide for Journalists", authored by Reporters sans Frontières and published by UNESCO is intended to provide practical guidelines for journalists conducting investigations into violations of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. It includes chapters on the basic documents on the principle of press freedom, reference documents on professional ethics, guidelines for journalists who investigate human rights violations, procedures for protecting journalists; guidelines for writing reports on investigations; and relations with International Committee of the Red Cross and non-governmental organisations defending human rights and press freedom.
