New Printing Plant for Independent Press Opens in Serbia and Montenegro

03-09-2003 ()
A new printing plant for the private, independent media in Serbia and Montenegro will open this month in Belgrade. The project, which is coordinated by UNESCO and supported by funds from Denmark, France, Germany and the European Union will give the independent newspapers and weeklies a long-awaited possibility to compete with other print media on an equal footing.
“We have been missing this facility for the last many years”, says project coordinator Natasa Vukovic, presently in charge of running the project.

First initiated during the Milosevic regime, when the independent press was on a steep uphill road towards bringing their messages to the population, this project saw quite a number of political and social developments before it is now being successfully brought to completion.

The plant will be run by a non-profit joint venture between the Association for Private Media (APM) and the largest of the independent newspapers in the country, Blic. Detailed rules secure that all independent media will have access to newsprint, to the necessary printing times, and to distribution – also catered for by an independent APM company, supported by UNESCO earlier.
