Within the UN system, UNESCO has a unique mandate and expertise to promote culture as a force for peace and sustainable development. UNESCO’s Culture Sector, also known as Major Programme IV – MP IV, works to demonstrate the pivotal role of cultural heritage and creativity as a means of achieving sustainable development and peace. It does this through a global platform for international cooperation and dialogue based on the implementation of the Organization’s Conventions, Recommendations, Declarations  and Intergovernmental Programmes, which seeks  to engage  States in dialogue and  cooperation at the international levels as a means  of facilitating inclusive governance, sharing knowledge and best practices at the policy level.

This cooperation platform is conducive  to leveraging the  contribution  of cultural and  natural  resources to sustainable development through the promotion, protection  and safeguarding of heritage– with particular emphasis on  immovable  heritage  (1972  and  1954 Conventions),   moveable   cultural  property   (1954 and 1970), underwater cultural heritage (2001) and intangible cultural heritage (2003). UNESCO works to strengthen national capacities to better conserve, safeguard, manage and promote heritage at the professional and institutional levels and within communities.  It also promotes the educational potential of heritage and history, in particular by strengthening traditional knowledge and integrating knowledge of heritage and history into formal and non-formal education.

In the field of creativity, UNESCO works to support policies and regulatory frameworks to create   and strengthen national and  local specialized  institutions, and provide expertise to promote, protect  and transmit cultural resources for social and economic  development, derived from the internationally agreed principles contained in the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the  Diversity of Cultural Expressions and  the 2003  Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible  Cultural Heritage.  Click here for more information.
