In a statement issued in connection with UNESCO’s International Conference on Broadcast Media and Climate Change, which will take place in Paris on 4 and 5 September 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon encourages broadcasters to “dedicate the resources and broadcasting space needed to report on the climate challenge with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.”

Over the last 29 years UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) has been providing support to developing countries for projects related to freedom of expression, media pluralism and community media. The number of applications for IPDC funding from East African countries has remarkably increased since the last two years. IPDC has responded to emerging media development priorities in the region, such as conflict-sensitive reporting and the coverage of climate change issues.

Film makers and artists gathered at the Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa last week to gain new insights into the production of children’s television. Participants viewed top quality children’s programmes from around the world, collected by the Prix Jeunesse International, bi-annual children’s television festival held in Munich, Germany.
14-08-2009 (Kathmandu) Training for women journalists starts today in Janakpur, Nepal
25 women journalists from the Terai region of Nepal will be trained on personal security, human rights, basic journalism skills, and conflict and gender-sensitive journalism. UNESCO and the Nepal Press Institute, which organized this training, hope that it will help women journalists protect themselves and will reduce the amount of violence against them.

The first East African Independent Producers Forum opens today in Nairobi, Kenya. 12-08-2009 (Brasilia) UNESCO presents ICT training project for teachers to Brazilian managers in education
On 4 August UNESCO’s Brasilia Office, in partnership with Microsoft Brazil, presented the Portuguese version of ICT Competency Standards for Teachers to managers and decision makers in education. This UNESCO publication, consisting of three parts, was prepared in the framework of the ICT Competency Framework for Teachers (ICT-CFT) project, which brings together specific guidelines for planning training programmes for teachers to ensure the acquisition of ICT skills by students.

UNESCO extends to 31 August 2009 the deadline for submission of entries for the logo competition for World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. UNESCO and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) have launched this international competition to design a logo that would give the Day, celebrated on 27 October, its own brand.

Teaching, Learning and e-Pedagogy: Teacher Professional Development for Knowledge Societies is the theme of the 2009 UNESCO-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education. Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided between two winners. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2009.

07-08-2009 (East London) Potential centre of excellence in Africa to train community broadcasters
UNESCO and the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Broadcast School have entered into a partnership to train community radio broadcasters from Lesotho and Swaziland. The training seminar will focus on starting up community radio stations in these countries. The training will take place at the Walter Sisulu University broadcast studios in East London, South Africa, from 16 to 21 August 2009.

UNESCO and Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) release the Arabic version of an important guide to basic methods and techniques in investigative journalism, filling a gap in the literature of the profession. Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists, which is also available in English and French, can be downloaded online for free.
