Promoting Chiquitano culture in Bolivia through ICT

A series of training courses on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for media workers from Chiquitano communities in Bolivia are being organized with the support of UNESCO´s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).
The Chiquitano people encompass more than 40 lowland ethnic groups scattered over five provinces in the Santa Cruz department of Bolivia. Until now, they did not have an opportunity to promote their culture, language and accomplishments. ICT can give this opportunity to them. Through new communication tools the Chiquitano communities will be able to circulate their own media and Internet contents, to strengthen communication among them, to preserve and promote their cultural identity, and to address the existing imbalance in access to information.
Using ICT for the Promotion and Diffusion of Chiquitano Culture project, which aims to respond to communication needs of Bolivian indigenous communities, was approved for funding by the 53rd session of the IPDC Bureau in March 2009. It started in July 2009 and is being implemented by the Bolivian association Support for Indigenous Farmers in East Bolivia (APCOB).
15 media workers and correspondents from grassroots organizations will attend the training under this project. The training activities will be carried out through a system of ‘learning through practice’, which consists in using radio and Internet production tools to communicate and promote culture.
