Teacher professional development and networking

The UN Development Programme has defined "capacity" as "the ability of individuals, institutions and societies to perform functions, solve problems, and set and achieve objectives in a sustainable manner". The term "capacity development" describes the task of developing levels of human and institutional capacity. IITE will concentrate its efforts on contributing to the pursuit of UNESCO`s strategic objectives by providing deeper and concentrated support and services, specifically through capacity development activities. In accordance with UNESCO`s vision and mission for ICT use in education, IITE`s strategic objectives in capacity development area are:

  • to organize pre- and in-service training, including open and distance education, for educational personnel on the use of information and communication technologies in education, giving priority to developing countries and countries in transition, and
  • to foster the development of UNESCO regional programmes on the application of information and communication technologies in education in all Member States and, particularly, in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The actual methodology will vary from country to country but should include:

  • Presentations on ICT usage in education at the highest levels
  • High level training for Ministers of Education in order to ensure overarching support within the State/country.
  • Workshops/seminars for national teacher trainers.
  • Development and implementation of the high-level master programs and advanced courses on ICTs in education in partnership with the leading universities worldwide.
  • Sharing methodological, and information materials on ICT usage in education globally through the web portal and at the country level though IITE network and partners.
  • Investigating alternative ways of training secondary school teachers.

In line with designated objectives for the current biennium IITE has planned the development and piloting the Training of Teacher Trainers "ICTs, Pedagogical Innovations, Teacher Education Programmes: New Trends in Teaching with and about ICT". In connection with this  task the following activities are planned:

  • Conduction of Training Needs Analysis covering five Member States with involvement of national and international experts. Creating of Summary Report with Recommendations, including TNA`s output and collection of best practices.
  • Designing of the Training programme based on the TNA`s output, and preparation of the training curriculum, materials for trainers and learners, multimedia, self-learning and assessment/evaluation components.
  • Carrying out of the three stage pilot training (in-country, face-to-face and back to practice), and collection of the feedback on the first batch graduates back-to-practice training.

In addition, IITE  will participate in the establishment of Masters Degree programmes in the field of ICT and other projects at regional and sub-regional levels in collaboration with professional communities, government and non-government organizations of the Member States.
