UNESCO’s Santiago Office celebrates World Press Freedom Day with series of activities

For the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, the UNESCO Office in Santiago has launched a new website dedicated to press freedom, entitled "Freedom of Information: The Right to Know in Bicentennial Chile". A series of activities will encourage the debate about freedom of information and gather together representatives of various institutions working in the field.
The following partners joined UNESCO's Office in Santiago in this initiative: the Communication and Image Institute at the University of Chile, the UNESCO Chair in Mass Media and Citizen Participation at the Diego Portales University, the Chile Journalists’ Association and the Library of Santiago.
The main event to celebrate World Press Freedom Day is taking place today at the Library of Santiago. It has been designed as a seminar aimed at stimulating the discussion on freedom of information in the context of Latin America. Three round tables will be held in the framework of the seminar and will focus on the following topics:
Transparency, Access to Public Information and Role of Press and Civil Society: Players who have been developing strategies on the access to public information will share their experiences regarding methodologies, problems, challenges and the possibilities of improving the existing legal frameworks.
Role of Traditional Media and Social Networks in Catastrophes: Participants will discuss media coverage of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Chile.
Pending Debate on Public Media: This round table will focus on the role of public media in a democracy.
In the framework of the celebration of the Day a new book on Latin American media in XXI century will officially be launched today at the Communication and Image Institute of the University of Chile. Entitled Los Dueños de la Palabra (The Owners of the World), the book is authored by Guillermo Mastrini, from the University of Buenos Aires, and Martín Becerra, from the University of Quilmes.
