Maghreb adaptation of UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education focuses on gender mainstreaming

UNESCO’s Office in Rabat is holding a consultation meeting on 28 February and 1 March 2011 in Rabat, Morocco, to finalize the Maghreb adaptation of the UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education. This regional adaptation focuses on gender mainstreaming in journalism education.
The event is organized at the Higher Institute of Information and Communication (ISIC) in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the GIZ Morocco-German cooperation agency for development and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).
This meeting is a follow-up to the consultation meeting for the adaptation of the UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education in the Maghreb countries, which took place in Rabat from 14 to 16 December 2009. Gender mainstreaming in journalism education was recommended as a main line of action for the adaptation of the UNESCO Curricula to the Maghreb context.
The meeting this week has brought together representatives of journalism institutions from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, who will analyse and revise the first draft of the UNESCO Model Curricula with gender perspective. Key issues on gender mainstreaming in journalism education include:
development of strategic projects to meet institutional needs to mainstream gender issues in journalism schools; and
teacher-training on gender mainstreaming in journalism courses.
The UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education is a generic model that can be adapted according to each country’s specific needs. It takes into account social, economic, political and cultural contexts of developing countries and emerging democracies, highlighting the connection between democracy and journalism, and arguing for a more cross-disciplinary approach within journalism-training organizations.
