Donors increase support to IPDC in 2006

The donors supporting the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) have significantly increased their financial support to the Programme in 2006, enabling it to mobilise a total of nearly 2,7 million US dollars this year for media development projects.
The main contributors to the Programme were Denmark (US$ 445,000 for 2006), Finland (US$ 250,000 for 2006), Norway (US$ 654,000 for two years), Spain (US$ 531,000 for 2006), Switzerland (US$ 501,000 for three years) and the USA (US$ 305,000 for 2006).
Finland and Norway doubled their financial assistance compared to their previous contribution to the IPDC, while the United States increased its contribution five-fold and Spain ten-fold.
Other donors to the IPDC, which include Andorra, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, India, Japan and Tanzania, contributed a total of US$ 345,500 in 2006.
This increase in donor confidence can in part be explained by the very positive conclusions of the independent evaluation of the Programme conducted in January 2006 by a team of experts from the University of Oslo. The report stated that: “Significant and impressive changes have taken place within the IPDC since the [previous] 2002 evaluation. All the recommendations that were proposed have been implemented. It is our impression that the IPDC has taken the 2002 recommendations very seriously and has put a remarkable effort in implementing the reforms of the working methods.” The report also confirmed the importance of multilateral arrangements such as the IPDC for development cooperation and highlighted the “unquestionable” reputation of this catalytic Programme.
