Workshop on Asian-Pacific documentary heritage starts tomorrow

A three-day training workshop will be held at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO Peace Centre in Icheon, Republic of Korea, from 18 to 20 February 2009, to provide an in-depth overview of the criteria and other requirements necessary to complete a nomination form for the Memory of the World Register.
The Memory of the World Register is used as a mechanism to increase global awareness of the existence and importance of documentary heritage, and is becoming widely known as a prestigious form of recognition for documentary heritage of outstanding value and world significance. Currently, 158 items from almost 70 countries and one international organization are listed on the International Register. This includes 38 items from 15 Asia-Pacific countries, in addition to four items listed on the regional register.
However, there are many Member States in the region that are not yet present on the International Register. Therefore UNESCO, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, the Korean Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea have organized this workshop to help countries in the region identify their documentary heritage and have it recognized and listed on one or more of the Memory of the World registers.
The specific objectives of the workshop are to:
The workshop will bring together one representative from the following countries: Bhutan, Cook Islands, Fiji, Maldives, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Viet Nam.
