IPDC-funded Summer School on Multimedia Journalism

The Journalists and editors from local news agencies, print and broadcast media of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries took part in the Summer School on Multimedia Journalism on 8-22 June in Moscow.
The training programme combined innovative learning approaches and experience exchange opportunities. The project aims to strengthen capacities of media specialists, to contribute to media pluralism in CIS countries and to revitalize social dialogue by means of advanced technologies.

Two sessions of 5-day intensive studies were conducted in the premises of the Higher School of Journalism and covered a wide array of topics: theory and practice of multimedia journalism and management of interactive multimedia projects; convergence journalism and fundamentals of multimedia reporting. Under the supervision of the renowned experts and media practitioners the participants of the training explored possibilities and challenges of multimedia technologies in terms of creating common interactive space and accessing diverse audiences.

As part of the training, short-term internships were held at the Russian News and Information Agency RIA Novosti. Practical sessions focused on video and photo processing and editing; digital publishing; internet resource development; setting a multimedia editorial office.

28 journalists and editors from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine participated in the training. It was also attended by representatives of media organizations of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, which sets ground for further development of this pilot initiative.

To facilitate access to the training reference materials and provide communicatory platform for learning, a special informational resource was developed: http://hsemedia-leto.blogspot.com.

Following the initial stage of the training, the participants are required to develop, in consultation with the trainers, models of their own multimedia projects within distance-learning component of the project.

The initiative is part of the project "Multimedia Technology for the Development of Mass Media Independence and Professional Standards of Journalists”, funded by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). The project is implemented jointly by the Higher School of Journalism (State University Higher School of Economics) and Russian News and Information Agency RIA Novosti, with the support of the UNESCO Office in Moscow.
