Raising awareness on local environmental issues through TV documentaries

Industrial pollution in Croatia, sewage spillage in Serbia, deforestation in the Balkans and ecological education are among the topics covered by short current affairs stories produced by South East European television stations members of the Eurovision News Exchange (ERNO).
With the support of UNESCO, the short features addressing local environmental issues were exchanged and broadcasted by ERNO’s participants broadcasters and compiled into a 24-minute documentary “Green Paradise—Already Lost or Still Possible to be Regained.”
Professional reporting on environmental issues is part of the mission of public service broadcasters. It contributes to raising public awareness about the endangerment of the region’s natural heritage, as ERNO staff says.
Cooperation among media of the South East Europe on covering threats that often impact beyond the borders of the single country, increases mutual understanding and fosters a regional coordinated effort for tackling common environmental emergencies.
ERNO news exchange was launched in December 2003 in order to strengthen cooperation among national television outlets of South East Europe, promote public service broadcasting, improve the professionalism of TV news staff. With the financial and technical support by UNESCO, the European Commission, Finland, the Finnish broadcaster YLE and the European Broadcasting Union, since 2004 ERNO has been instrumental in the production and exchange via satellite of more than 1200 news items per year. Recently, the ERNO network has expanded its focus from news items to include the exchange of feature and current affairs programmes.
