The contest for the Best School Newspaper served as a launching pad for the project, initiated by the UNESCO Moscow Office, aimed to enhance media literacy and to develop curriculum of media education for secondary schools in Russia.
Over 150 schools took part in the contest, organized by the Non Commercial Partnership of Journalism Faculties and the Faculty of Journalism of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, with the support of the Russian Union of Journalists. At the award ceremony, held on 11 April 2009, winners in 3 nominations were announced.
The Media Literacy at School project targets secondary school students and teachers, and seeks to empower them with media literacy skills, as well as to pave way for the introduction of media and information literacy components into school curricula.
Within the framework of the project several activities are planned to be held. A summer school on media literacy for teachers will be organized in June 2009. Its programme is designed to provide teachers with essential competencies in the field, to share best practices and to raise awareness on the role of media literacy for the youth. Furthermore, practical workshops will be conducted for school students, enabling them to become media-wise participants of the modern media culture.
Following the initial pilot stage of the project, reference materials, teaching programmes and other resources will be available for all stakeholders.
