Regional WSIS Preparations Continue

After Bamako, Bucharest and Tokyo, regional conferences for the World Summit on the Information Society will shortly take place in Bavaro and Beirut. Ministers from Latin American and Caribbean countries will meet from 29 to 31 January in Bavaro, Dominican Republic, whereas their peers from the 11 Member States of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will meet in Beirut, Lebanon, just one week later.
The Regional Preparatory Ministerial Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean for the World Summit on the Information Society in Bávaro Dominican Republic is aimed at preparing LAC's contribution to the second meeeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom II) and to formulate a regional position for the first phase of the Summit. The Conference that is expected to adopt the "Bavaro Plan of Action and Principles" is being organized by the Government of the Dominican Republic in close cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) In preparation of this conference, UNESCO had (co-) organized two regional consultation related to WSIS (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 2002 and Tegucigalpa, Honduras, October 2002).
The Western Asia Preparatory Conference for WSIS will be held from 4 to 6 February in Beirut, Lebanon. The event aims at developing a common vision and understanding of the information society for the ESCWA/ Arab Region while producing a document representing the regional input for PrepCom II. The conference for participants from the 11 Member States of ESCWA (Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi-Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Yemen) is organized by the Lebanese Government in close cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the UNESCO Cairo Office.
The League of Arab States is expected to organize the probably last regional WSIS preparatory conference at ministerial level, in Cairo (Egypt), in June 2003, at the invitation of the Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
