Which rights are protected under freedom of expression? What are the conditions needed to fully enjoy it? What roles do governments, journalists and civil society play in protecting this freedom? How does freedom of expression work in the Internet era?

The mobile game application invites users to explore in a few minutes these questions and learn about the basics of the right of all people to freedom of expression as stated under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The app also features mini-games through which users can test their knowledge on freedom of expression.

The application has been designed as an easily accessible educational tool for all users interested in understanding the basic notions of freedom of expression, freedom of the press and the role of the media in a democracy. Teachers and educators are also invited to use it in their classrooms.

In a joint message on the occasion of the Human Rights Day 2015, Haoliang Xu, Chair of UNDG Asia-Pacific, and Matilda Bogner, OHCHR Regional Representative for South East-Asia, highlighted that “in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), increased attention to equality, governance and accountable institutions reflects an understanding that freedom from want and from fear are indispensable for sustainable development.”
