International workshop on mobile science started today in Trieste

“Mobile Science: Sensing, Computing and Dissemination” is the title of the workshop, organized by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and supported by UNESCO, that is taking place in Trieste, Italy, from 2 to 5 November 2010. The event aims at engaging the scientific community in developing countries in the design and deployment of the newest mobile scientific applications.
Participants will learn how to use mobile technology tools to retrieve scientific data, how to apply appropriate web-based analysis to assimilate mobile data into scientific studies, and how to share their scientific findings with a potentially large mobile audience.
The workshop is organized by the ICTP Science Dissemination Unit, with the assistance of the University of Washington (USA) and the UCLA Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (USA). UNESCO has contributed for the participation of scientists from the African continent.
At the workshop ICTP will launch its first open book, m-Science: Sensing, Computing and Dissemination, which has been prepared under a Creative Commons license. This publication aims to create awareness on the huge possibilities of mobile science (or "m-science" in short), as well as to motivate a new generation of learners, scholars and scientists to participate in the challenges of this rapidly developing new field.
Mobile applications offer tremendous benefits to academic research and education, and to the society as a whole throughout the world. This is an opportunity that deserves attention and promotion, especially in less developed areas, where mobile phones are the first telecommunications technology in history to have more users than in the developed world.
ICTP, located in Trieste, is a UNESCO institute, founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP promotes advanced studies and research in physics and mathematics, with special emphasis on developing countries. The Centre provides opportunities for scientists from developing countries to participate in world-class research conducted by its scientific staff and other scientists; creates international fora for the exchange of scientific information through schools, workshops and conferences; offers pre-PhD educational programmes to students from the least developed countries.
