IFAP Chair Laurence Zwimpfer receives Pickering Award for Engineering Leadership 2006

In a ceremony last week in New Zealand’s capital Wellington, Prime Minister Helen Clark handed over the country’s prestigious William Pickering Award for Engineering Leadership 2006 to Laurence Zwimpfer, chair of the Intergovernmental Council for UNESCO’s Information for All Programme.
The award recognizes Zwimpfer’s demonstrated excellence and leadership in the area of engineering practice over his career to the benefit of the engineering profession and his engagement for international cooperation in the area of ICT for development. Special mention was made in the Award citation of his work with UNESCO.
Begun in 2005, the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards are the premier awards for the engineering professionals of New Zealand. The awards are presented in two major areas: Individual Awards, that recognize leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and our young engineers; and Category Awards, that recognize achievement in the various industry areas, together with a Supreme Award for the best of the Category winners.
IFAP is the only intergovernmental programme exclusively dedicated to promoting universal access to information and knowledge for development – a key plank in building knowledge societies. The uniqueness of this mandate and its intergovernmental nature gives the Council the authority to speak on strategic priorities and to lobby at the international level about issues relating to the use of information and ICT for development.
