Salim Akoojee

Salim Akoojee joined UNESCO-UNEVOC in October 2015 as consultant for knowledge management, responsible for a range of research-relevant initiatives at the Centre. His role as Technical Specialist provides support for research relevant collaborative engagements intended to advance the TVET agenda internationally. His experience in education spans teaching, teacher training, university staff development and research. The PhD conferred by University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) explored the role of TVET for national development in a post-Apartheid context.

He is engaged extensively in TVET policy and skills development research in the course of his working life. He is also adjunct Associate Professor (Education) in South Africa and has published extensively in the area of further and higher education policy and practice. Numerous books and more than 30 research articles in national and international peer reviewed publications attests to extensive experience and expertise in the area. He currently serves as Senior Consultant Editor in ’Africa Education Review’ and is current Board Membership of the International Network of Innovative Apprenticeship (INAP). He has also worked on a range of international joint TVET research projects including for ILO/World Bank, British Council and DANIDA. He was also Chairperson of the TVET Technical Task Team on Further Education and Training at the Human Resources Development Council of South Africa (HRDSA and has been an invited peer reviewer, Building Skills for Work and Life (Shanghai 13-16th May 2012). His work incorporates critical perspectives on skills and TVET from the emerging South and exploring the role of TVET in varied national labour markets. Current interest includes cross-national TVET policy developments.
